Fair isn’t Equal

Navigating Workplace Dynamics – Striking the Right Balance

When training and consulting for various organizations, I find – unfortunately – that many employees adopt the attitude that everyone should be treated fairly and equally. If you share that opinion, consider this. Imagine the disastrous consequences if parents gave their six-year-old child the same liberties as their 16-year-old teenager. “Make sure you’re home from grade one by midnight.” Yikes! Parents understand the concept that we should treat all our children fairly – but certainly not equally. Perhaps we might do well to adopt the same perspective at work with employees and customers. Fairness is essential – but equality is overrated.
