The Hundred Dollar Handshake
A client in the fast lube business made an unusual gesture for his employees that got my attention. As part of an annual employee appreciation event, he brought me in to conduct an interactive customer service seminar with his team. That set the stage for the way he wrapped-up the event… He thanked them as a group, and explained that he wanted them to have a little something for their weekend. Then as they left, he shook each of their hands and handed them a crisp hundred dollar bill. While it’s not unusual for managers to give bonuses, it was the first time I’d seen one give his employees a $100 handshake. The amount of the bonus wasn’t what stood out – it was the image of the President literally handing each employee the cash. When was the last time someone gave you a hundred dollar bill in today’s age of electronic transfers? It made the boss’ gesture more tangible, more personal, and more memorable.
